“From somewhere

a calm musical note arrives.

You balance it on your tongue,

a single ripe grape,

till your whole body glistens.

In the space between breaths

you apply it to any wound

and the wound heals.”

Sound offers us many gifts.

The hum is a profound form of vocal expression that brings us into harmony with ourselves and with others. Our ancestors hummed and sang. How much of their use of voice contributed to their physical, tangible wellbeing? When we listen to gospel and the prayers, mantra, and affirmations that feed us – we experience the power of sound. Choral singing, pure tones, and sweet words from a lover are all healing. We’ve known this forever.
Intentional sound created in guided meditation, by our voices or by healing instruments can allow the body to enter into deep rest and meditative states, help regulate our nervous systems, and other more profound things we can talk about together! By using a combination of frequency and intention, you have access to these tools on a regular Tuesday, in your regular work clothes, in the comfort of your home or office.

Group meditations can be tailored to the group or individual (both, if private) and Can Include different offerings within the same structure (See: Present Memory), but here is what to expect in general:

Archives and Memory Caretaking

Expansive ways of looking at legacy, memory, and becoming an ancestor

Archival

Consultation

At it’s heart, this is a consultation session to help navigate moments of transition. The session is intended for us to reflect together on what legacy, memory, and the archive mean to you. Our initial conversation may lead us to examine the physical, digital, and intangible materials that you’ve collected over the course of your life and work and consider their potential afterlives.

Examples of what we might talk about during a consultation:

The embodied archive - the memories we hold in our bodies, minds, and spirits, across generations

  • Alternative ways to think about legacy and becoming an ancestor

  • Fear of loss, transition

  • “Stuckness” and perpetual states of being “in-between”

  • Reflection on generational stories, embodied memories

  • Artmaking with archival material

The physical and digital archive - material documentation of your work and life as paper or data bits

  • Digitization processes

  • How to conduct a collection analysis

  • How to write a work plan

  • Questions of inheritance and donation of documents

Anicka Austin

For the last 12 years, I’ve facilitated and led creative spaces, worked as an archivist and memory worker, and studied healing and liberation modalities. I’m a lifelong seeker and finding imaginative ways to fill spaces with beauty and meaning has often superseded any logic!

I believe that all of the seemingly disparate paths I’ve intuitively followed have led me to a place that is more centered, more compassionate, and more focused on how we can build tools to honor our wholeness and the interconnectedness that is inherent to our lives.
